"My moisturiser isn't working" is one of the most common skincare complaints there is, and in my experience the moisturiser is rarely broken. More often, it's solving the wrong problem — because dry skin and dehydrated skin look similar, feel similar, and need genuinely different things.
The difference in one sentence
Dry skin lacks oil. Dehydrated skin lacks water.
Dry skin is a skin type: skin that naturally produces less sebum and fewer surface lipids. It tends to be a long-term characteristic, often runs in families, and frequently affects the body as well as the face.
Dehydration is a skin state: skin whose outer layers are low on water right now. Any skin type can become dehydrated — including oily skin, which is where the confusion usually starts. Dehydration is typically temporary and driven by circumstances: weather, air conditioning, hot showers, over-cleansing, harsh products, too little sleep, long flights, illness or treatment.
You can be dry, dehydrated, both, or neither, and the answer changes what belongs in your routine.
No test at home is diagnostic, but these signals point you in the right direction:
Signs that lean dry (lacking oil):
- Your skin has felt this way for years, in most seasons
- Flakiness or rough texture, especially on cheeks and body
- Skin rarely looks shiny, even by afternoon
- Fine, papery texture; makeup clings to dry patches
Signs that lean dehydrated (lacking water):
- Tightness that appeared recently or comes and goes
- Skin looks dull and feels tight but can still get oily by midday
- Fine lines that look more pronounced when skin is tight and soften after moisturising
- It's worse after flights, air conditioning, hot showers or a new foaming cleanser.
A quick supplementary check: gently pinch a small area of cheek skin. Dehydrated skin often shows fine horizontal lines under light pressure and takes a beat to smooth back. (Take it as a hint, not a verdict.)
If your skin is persistently itchy, inflamed, cracked or painful, that's a conversation for your GP or dermatologist rather than a shopping decision.
What each one needs from a formula
If you lean dehydrated, prioritise humectants — and stop the leak. Humectants draw water back into the outer layers of skin. Hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule naturally present in skin, is the gold standard, holding many times its weight in water; panthenol and hydrolysed collagen peptides support the effect at the surface. Apply to slightly damp skin. Then address the cause: cooler showers, gentler cleansing, fewer exfoliants, a humidifier if you live in air conditioning. Dehydration you keep re-creating is dehydration you'll keep buying products for. The εὖSKIN match: Intensive Skin Gel — hyaluronic acid and hydrolysed collagen in a light, cooling gel with aloe and cucumber.
If you lean dry, prioritise oils and richer textures. Your skin is short on its own lipids, so give it fatty-acid-rich plant oils and more cushioning formulas that condition the skin and slow water loss from the surface. Cleanse once a day if you can get away with it, always with something mild. The εὖSKIN match: Recovery Oil — hemp seed and grapeseed oils, naturally rich in skin-conditioning fatty acids — under the Intensive Cream, our richer option with panthenol.
If you're both — very common in Australian winters — you want water drawn in and held there: humectants first, oil and cream over the top. A few drops of oil pressed into the driest areas, then gel or cream over the whole face, morning and night on slightly damp skin. The εὖSKIN match: the Twin Concentrate Pack covers both sides of the equation.
And for the body, where hot showers and towels do their worst: a daily-wear lotion with the same humectant backbone. The εὖSKIN match: Soothing All Over Body Lotion, with hyaluronic acid, panthenol, calendula and aloe.
Why this matters for what you buy
A person with dehydrated, oil-normal skin who buys the richest butter-thick cream on the shelf often ends up with congestion and no less tightness. A person with genuinely dry skin who buys a watery hyaluronic serum and nothing else wonders why their skin still flakes. Same complaint, opposite mistakes. Matching the formula to the deficit is the whole game.
