Skincare for Sensitive, Reactive Skin: What to Look For (and What to Leave on the Shelf)
If your skin seems to react to "everything", it's tempting to conclude that your skin is the problem. In my experience as a formulation scientist, it usually isn't. The problem is that most skincare on the shelf simply isn't designed for skin like yours. Sensitive skin doesn't need more products or stronger products. It needs better-chosen ones. Here is the checklist I'd give a friend standing in the skincare aisle feeling overwhelmed — the same checklist we formulate against at εὖSKIN. 1. No synthetic fragrance, no essential oils Fragrance is one of the most common causes of cosmetic skin reactions, and it adds nothing functional to a formula. Check the ingredient list for "parfum" or "fragrance", and for fragrant essential oils — lavender, citrus, peppermint, eucalyptus — which are complex mixtures of aroma compounds and among the most common botanical culprits for stinging. Be aware that "unscented" is not the same as fragrance-free: unscented products can contain masking fragrances. 2. Botanicals chosen for tolerance, not for the label Here's a nuance the marketing wars miss: "botanical" is neither good nor bad for sensitive skin. Fragrant essential oils are botanical, and they're a leading cause of reactions. But so are some of the most gently behaved ingredients in cosmetic chemistry — aloe leaf gel, calendula, cucumber and chamomile extracts have earned centuries of use on uncomfortable skin precisely because skin tolerates them so well. The question is never "is it natural?" but "how does reactive skin respond to this specific ingredient, and what's the evidence?" Sensible texture and format choices Lighter, cushioning textures tend to be more comfortable for reactive skin than high-foaming washes or watery alcohol-based toners. Cleanse with lukewarm water and something mild; if your face squeaks afterwards, the cleanser is taking more than dirt with it. For targeted comfort, a few drops of a well-chosen facial oil pressed into the driest areas often does more than layering multiple creams. 6. Patch test like you mean it Even the gentlest formula deserves a proper introduction. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm or behind the ear once daily for three to five days. If there's no redness, itching or stinging, introduce it to your face — one new product at a time, at least a week apart. If you've had a recent procedure, patch testing first is essential. This way, if something does disagree with you, you'll know exactly what it was. 7. Know when it's more than sensitivity Persistent redness, itching, broken or painful skin, or reactions that are getting worse over time deserve a professional opinion. A GP or dermatologist can identify whether there's an underlying condition that needs medical management. Cosmetic skincare is about comfort and care for skin prone to sensitivity; it is not a treatment for skin conditions.
